How To Be Consistent In Your Branding

What does Branding even mean?

If you are looking into any sort of marketing, you will hear the term Branding.

Even I’ve discussed Branding before with my articles How to build your brand as a writer, How to Create an Awesome Author website and Why you should use a Favicon for branding.

Branding simply means developing a professional, unique identity and message.  It is the “image” that will distinguish you from others in your profession/field.

So, why should Branding be consistent?

By keeping your branding consistent, it creates an overall image/style that not only reflects you but also identifies you.

Writers especially use their names as part of their branding.  Whether it’s their real name or their Pen name.

Now since someone else may share the same name as you, by having a branded image, if someone Googles your name and find several sites, if they click through and instantly see the same, consistent branding they will know which pages are yours.

How can I be consistent with my branding?

Here are a few ways to do this:

Your image

if you include your photo, logo (or like me, an illustration) try and use the same image on all your social media pages.  This is just as the avatar, don’t feel like you can’t have extra pictures representing you.

For example, on this blog, I have my avatar on the right-hand side of the main page.  On my current Who, Me? page, I don’t include a picture.  When I finally decide to, I will probably add a different image than my avatar.

Your banner

Everything has banners these days – that’s blogs, websites, Facebook, Twitter etc.  Try and keep these mostly consistent.  You will notice this website has a specific header that I use part of my branding.

You can see I have made slight changes so that the Twitter banner has a slightly amended tagline, and additional images to match.  But the use of the avatar and the inkpot image keep the consistency.

Colour scheme

This is a good one to use for branding style.  By choosing a colour scheme that works for you.  There are some great writers who have a very noticeable colour scheme.   A wonderful example is YA author Kim Chance, check out Kim’s Instagram page to see her use of a colour scheme.

 

What you are looking for with branding, is a cohesive style that marches across all your platforms.  That style, those images, that colour scheme will become synonymous with you.

  1. We are a creature of habit. What may seem ridiculous at first, either name of image, becomes the norm after a while. Thirty years ago the word Google would have caused a giggle. Now it’s part of our language.

    I think it’s important that we find something we are comfortable with and stick with it. After a while people will see whatever that is and think of us.Either our name and/or the image we choose will become us.

    1. Thanks for the comment Bryan (apologies for the delay). You are so right. I am old enough to remember the time before Google and snickering at the name when it came out.

  2. This is what I did last year when I was trying to re-do my whole blog. I’m still slowly turning my social media over so everything matches, but so far so good.

    1. I know what you mean. I am still working through my blog to get the posts themselves to have a nice clean consistency of colours/pictures etc. Feels never ending!

      This post actually came to mind when I amended my Twitter banner so it was more in fitting with the others. 🙂

      I think you’ve done a great job. Your brand image and style is very distinctive and eye catching.

      1. It is never ending! I want to go through my old posts and change the signature at the bottom (it’s still the blue one) and add links to other posts, update graphics, and the like… it’s tedious.

      2. That is what I’ve been doing. I had a simple spreadsheet and it’s just got bigger! So now it has all the posts, then a list of everything I wanted to change including word count, additional links, pictures, signature…. I am so close to finishing just to realise ….

        I TOTALLY forgot to update all the URL slugs so I now have to go back THROUGH them all, change any relevant ones… which means I have to recheck ALL the links within posts.

        I was so pleased I had almost finished (my posts at least, still need to go back through old guest posts)…but now I have to recheck all mine again. ARGGGHH

      3. Oh, no!!! That’s awful. I’ve been there though. I went through my categories only to add a couple more and then I had to go through the posts all over again… it’s annoying.

        You’ll get there though. Slowly, but surely. 🙂

      4. Do you ever think the updating-the-blog process will ever end, Rachel? I swear I am constantly finding new issues to go back and fix.

      5. I don’t think so, no. But I see that as a good thing. As we blog we’re constantly learning new things about the process, our style, and ourselves. So I find it to be a good thing we need to go back to update old stuff.
        As for maintenance… that’s more annoying, but I could say the same thing, lol.
