Thanks for this great podcast. As you know, I’m a middle-grade author. What I have learned from my readers is that they love reading about characters they can relate to. They also like characters that do things they may be afraid to do or just can’t do right now. My character travels around the world solving mysteries and having adventures. What kid wouldn’t love to be able to do that? I have learned that by the time they are tweens, (8-12) they aren’t as interested in reading stories with animals as the main characters. (Animals in the books are OK of course, think Because of Winn-Dixie). The point you made about being current is right on. Also, it’s important not to put things in the book that are too trendy as it will date the book. I published the first in my series 13 years ago and it is still selling so hopefully I got that right.
Thanks for listening, Darlene. Yes, relatability is definitely a big point, especially with kids. I always remember wanting to be a secret spy when I was younger and go on fun secret adventures!
It is so strange having to consider what could “date” a book and being mindful of it. I think it’s awesome that your first book is still selling so well after so many years – you have obviously got it right!
I can’t wait until we have you on the podcast to share your insights with our listeners. 🙂
