I do feel the sting quite a bit, but I do appreciate constructive criticism. Negative criticism–putting down the author as well as the work–does no one any good.
I doubt that sting ever goes away – my partner is my Alpha reader and my biggest fan, but has to point out errors or weaknesses or things that don’t make sense and I still feel that painful sting when he says it – even if it’s something small surrounded by a lot of positive.
But it makes us better writers. As you said though, negative criticism that puts down the author and their work is just mean and wrong
