Ep 265 | The Merry Writer Podcast

Creating a book is hard, I’m not even talking about the writing side, but all that comes after the editing, formatting, cover design etc. That costs money…a lot of money. But you can help create seed money for your project with Kickstarter*. So in today’s episode Rachel and I ask and answer:

Thanks, Ari, for an enlightening podcast. I had no idea about the Campaign, and it would be a great way to get backers to invest in all the costs of getting a book out. However, the expenses as you said can be problematic. When people pay for things or invest in you, they want to get a return in some form. What worries me is will they also buy your book when it’s published since they’ve backed you?

    1. Hi Sumi, thanks for listening to the podcast. Yes, that’s it exactly, there is always so much more to do as it becomes a lot of work creating new items or curating boxes of goodies for the “backers”.

Some authors actually make tiers that include the finished book – so the tier that the “backers” pick gives them the book (and so covers the cost of purchase) and maybe they will sign it as an extra.

I think Kickstarters definitely need to be planned carefully as it can be too easy for people to get swept up in them, not realise all the extra work and be left with very little at the end.
