I’m putting this right at the top to make sure everyone sees it. The GDPR is a new regulation from the EU and can affect even non-EU-based sites. Take the time to check you are compliant. And if you don’t there are some pretty heinous fines. So, take some time to look into it.

What is the GDPR?
You may have seen information popping up regarding the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) that came into force on the 25 May 2018.
The GDPR is the new data protection regulation from the European Union that updates the old Data Protection Act 1998.
Does this apply to me?
There seems to be the idea that the GDPR only affects businesses and only affects people in the EU. However, if you collect someone’s personal data then this regulation applies to you.
Also, if you are not in the EU but collect data of people FROM the EU, then this regulations applies to you.
So, if you are obtaining, recording, sorting and/or sharing personal data then you need to take the GDPR seriously.
Personal data can include email addresses (such as for mailing lists, giveaway winners), names, IP addresses etc.
What do I need to do?
Rather than me writing a long post regarding this, I am going to link to some pages I have found really useful. Please note these are not legal advisory articles, but these bloggers have done a lot of research into this topic and may be of you.
Take the time to check these out. It’s not worth being non-compliant. Also, while this regulation has come from the EU, other countries are already starting to look at their own data protection regulations.
Learn about it now, get prepared.
