February Goals 2018 | Monthly Goals

I am making a change and have decided to break my goals down into monthly ones.

Since moving to N. Ireland there have been some big changes and I feel this will work better for me both in remembering them and completing them πŸ™‚

My goals are not just writing goals, because I have other projects that need my time as well.Β  Also, these aren’t my “to do” lists because that’s a whole other hornets’ nest of tasks.

01 Write at least 30K for the 85K challenge

In January I managed to fall behind due to being ill (again) and struggling with some depressive episodes.Β  So I am putting this at the top of my list to try and claw myself back on track

02 Create character profiles for my new WIP

I have the details of these characters, mostly in my head.Β  I want to get them organised and into their profile templates.

03 Loosely sketch out ideas for the sequel to Dark Hart

My current WIP “Dark Hart” has just been through its first full edit and is now going to be handed over to my Alpha Reader (my other half) before I do the second set of edits.Β  Since this is the first book in a series, I want to draft out what is happening in the second book.

If you heard my Audio Interview with Michael at Ex Libris, you will have heard that I’ve been writing this series for a LONG time and actually have several plots for later books.Β  I just need to get them in order and clean them up.

04 Add another 20 scenes to my Master List

I have a lot of scenes (1000s) of my current series already written.Β  I am currently compiling them into a spreadsheet so I can build up all the different plots and get them in the right order – as well as catalogue everything I’ve written so I don’t miss anything.

05 Update at least 10 earlier blog posts

As you will have noticed I have changed the look and layout of my blog posts, both the main image/banner and the footer.Β  So I am going back through old posts and amending them.Β  I do like consistency. πŸ™‚

06 Plan all blog posts for this month

To be more efficient, I plan my blog posts ahead of time.Β  Though I am now trying to do them a month at a time.

07 Reading Challenge 50 (5 books)

I am once again doing the GoodReads Reading Challenge and have a total of 50 books to read in a year.Β  Since I am currently busy I am keeping the number of books per month (in these early months) short.Β  So I just need to do 5 this month.

08 Organise my study

Since moving I haven’t had full chance to give my new study a real sort through.Β  So I want to get it organised.

09 Do (at least) 10 online courses

I have access to many online courses currently, so I am trying to get through several courses a month.Β  Most of them are on different methods and types of marketing which is helping me create my marketing plan.

10 Complete 1 beta reads

I am now hoping to keep on top of the beta reads I have agreed to do.Β  Due to the bouts of illness I had recently, I feel like I have been letting people down.Β  I don’t want to do that again so I am working on not taking on too many.

So, do you have any goals?Β  Do you have monthly or quarterly ones?Β

I try not to give myself any more than 10 goals a month, as even that is pretty lofty.

Happy writing

  1. I have reduced my goals of things to do this month as I’m off for a bit and find goals hard to achieve which as Clare says can be tough with anxiety. Hope you achieve yours, you do seem well organised and enjoying what you’re doing since you moved πŸ™‚

    1. I know what you mean, I had quarterly goals but I really struggled with them. Monthly ones are easier for me.

I think if I still had an office job, I would only have given myself a few goals. I think we just need to match goals to our time, things change and we don’t always have the same time / energy to spare.

I hope you accomplish your goals!!

  2. Just like Pearl, I hardly ever make plans or to-do lists because as soon as I make them something happens to wreck everything.
I would suggest that with your anxiety and depression it would be best not to give yourself too much to do in a short space of time because that encourages anxiety straightaway! It’s good to have goals but avoid timescales as much as possible and try not to be hard on yourself if you can’t manage something. Make sure you give yourself a treat when you achieve something on your list, no matter how small. This is always a good idea, I find! xx

    1. Thanks Clare, you are so right, it can bring on anxiety. I found having quarterly goals did that as the longer stretch of time meant I procrastinated more and then tried to cram them all in at the end. Now that I work for myself from home, I have a better control of my goals and I don’t have to do them all, just aim for around half. Then I’ll roll the incompleted ones over to next month.

I like the reward idea, I will definitely come up with something to treat myself. Thanks so much!! πŸ˜€

  3. I’ve no goals – or at least I don’t make a thing out of writing them down or posting them on calendars or bulletin boards around my work area. Usually, as soon as I say “I’m going to do X by Z.” things pop up in hoards to make it impossible to do X by then.

    I will be cheering you on! πŸ˜ƒ πŸ“£ πŸŽ‰

    1. lol I can understand that. Life has a way of sticking it’s oar in and messing things up. I do need to write them down… as I will totally forget to do anything if I didn’t. :p

Aww thank you Pearl, I appreciate the cheering πŸ˜€
