The NaNoWriMo Cometh

CaptureWell with only a day left before NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) starts (runs from 1 Nov – 30 Nov), writers all over the world are scrabbling to pull together plans, develop characters, create schedules or none of the above because they pants all the way.

Now I’ve never done NaNoWriMo (instead I do the 85K90Day challenge each year that starts on Jan 1st).  So as far as tips go, I am probably not the best person to give advise.

(EDIT: I have done a stupid thing…and just signed up for NaNoWriMo… I think I might be crazy)

So I found some articles I thought were useful from other writers and thought I’d drop them here.

Check them out and don’t forget, if you like what you read, give those websites/blogs a follow, drop a like and a comment.

There will be a new guest post on Wednesday and then I’ll be back on Friday… just trying to clear up this never-ending headache.

To all those of you who do participate in NaNo, I wish you luck.  Feel free to share your own wisdom for the coming month in the comments, would love to hear from you.

Happy writing.

About Ari Meghlen

I’ve been a writer since I was given unsupervised access to pens and am unable to write anything shorter than a trilogy. I (now) live in sprawling Northern Ireland which is greener than the green parts of England with my awesome boyfriend and 3 demon cats.

I spend my time lost in imaginary worlds, running my online jewellery shop, taking nature photos or watching bad movies.

Visit me on Facebook or just leave me a comment on this blog. I love comments 🙂

Feeling shy? Don’t know what to say? Here’s an ice-breaker question for you to answer in a comment: If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life,  what would it be?

  1. Hi Ari,
    Well . . .
I’ve tried NaNo every year since 2015 and I have never gotten anywhere near winning – not even when I set my own goal and ignore theirs. I have huge issues with consistency due to my ADD, so especting to write every day usually does me in.

“(EDIT: I have done a stupid thing…and just signed up for NaNoWriMo… I think I might be crazy)”

I was intending to just try “writing along,” so to speak, but just signed up since you took the plunge.
I don’t go by Pearl on there. I’m horribly fearful of public failure and couldn’t stand the thought that someone seeing me not finish NaNo might convince them my books aren’t any good. (or some such rot) Are you registered as Ari? I’ll contact you if you let me know your name on there. 😊

I’ve minimal ideas of what my novel is actually about, so I don’t expect to do well – but, hey, it may give me a jumpstart like those defibrillator paddles do for dying and dead people! (a better analogy than I care to admit 😶 )

    Hugs!

    • Hi Pearl, I understand. I’ve done the 85K challenge for the last 2 years and never finished because something happened and I just lost my focus and drive. But I go back every year! I don’t think it’s always about completing the challenge, but that we strive for the goal – whether we manage them or not.

Yay I am glad you decided to join too. It will be good knowing someone else who is doing it 😀 I am registered as Ari so do please reach out to me on NaNo *hugs*

Me too, I have a rough skeleton of an idea I had years ago that’s been sitting in the Seed pile for a while now. I tried to cobble the idea of a plot last night *laughs* didn’t really work so I’m kinda doing this almost blind.

We will keep each other going and it doesn’t matter if we don’t finish, we are taking part, we are getting some words down and that’s what matters!

Reach out to me at any time and if you need to chat or a morale boost, hit me up and I’ll cheer you on my friend. 😀

PS: if people judged your novels by whether you did or didn’t complete NaNo they would be idiots.

      • Hi Ari,
I found you on NaNo and made you a buddy. 😊
I also sent you an email with my “secret NaNo Name.” 😎 Hahaha

I love this! “We will keep each other going and it doesn’t matter if we don’t finish, we are taking part, we are getting some words down and that’s what matters!”

I will keep that somewhere I can see it this month!

And thank you for your encouragement in your postscript. 😀 ❤️

        Hugs!

  3. I confess I didn’t know about 85K90Day challenge and it feels so good to learn new stuff from blogging friends. I’ve never participated in NaNoWriMo or a similar challenge but every year I run a small feature in Ex Libris. I normally don’t bother people with self-promotion but this year I did my feature in english so if you are interested the link is https://youtu.be/1FrKsFV3ulU
