Blog Hop: 2017 Writing Goals

2017 Goals.jpgA goal is a dream with a deadline…way to suck the fun out of dreaming, eh! :) But if we want to move forward it helps to have a plan, a focus and goals are exactly that.

I had already been thinking about what my Writing Goals would be, especially with the 85K in 90 day challenge looming on the horizon (Jan – Mar 2017)

So when the new Blog Hop topic was Writing Goals for 2017, I thought let’s get them down!

#1 – Complete Dark Hart series (book 1)

Earlier this year I returned to my Dark Hart series and completely tore apart the first book. It had been in its second draft, having been written a few years ago and then left when it didn’t feel right. I changed a lot of it and finally, it feels right.

However, it’s time to stop messing about and get the damn thing not just plotted, not just a first draft but through numerous drafts and possibly even polished/reviewed…. (well…maybe)

#2 – Flesh out my newest novel idea (Shadow Veil series)

For those of you who read my recent post ‘How to Deal with Invading Story Ideas‘, you will know I was accosted by my writing muse while driving recently and was given a completely new novel idea.

Well rather than let it stew, I want to get some solid foundation of this novel sorted and a possible (albeit) loose outline scribbled.

#3 – Participate and actually COMPLETE the 85K in 90 Day Challenge

This is an awesome challenge run by Julie Valerie (yes the same Julie Valerie who also hosts these Blog Hops, so you know it’s going to be great) I participated last year but circumstances conspired against me and I failed to complete it. I wish to do better next time.

#4 – Sort all my scenes, snippets, notes & novel ideas into something akin to an organised system

Since I’ve been writing since I was 8 I have amassed quite a lot of the above and they are currently scattered around on papers, notepads,  hard drives, flash drives, different computer systems, not to mention in different formats on those computers… because I didn’t always keep up with transferring them over…

I appreciate the irony that I’ve written several posts about being organised and yet I show that there are parts of my writing world that scream disorganisation. Oh well :p

Normally with goals, I get overly excited (after all they are just more intense To Do lists…and I LOVE those kinds of lists) and so would write loads of goals. But I realise the four I have are pretty big especially since I also have a normal job, a side business and 3 blogs to manage. So I am trying to make it more manageable.

So dear readers, what are your 2017 Writing Goals?

Yes, I said come back this week for a guest post…and forgot it was Blog Hop week instead. I do have a bad memory (as mentioned in my Some (weird) Truths about Writers) so sorry for no Guest post but I hope you enjoyed the Blog Hop and I hope you participated 🙂

Happy writing

  1. All these wonderful posts on goals for next year. I am cranked to get started . . . but I do nap too much. My dog memoir is top for 2017, although I am working on a novel and a personal memoir. All my silly little stories about my six (now down to five) dogs that I’ve written over the years. It’s all there, just need to put in order, edit, and illustrate. Not a literary work by any imagination, but a book that will be fun. Plan to self publish so I can add my own pictures and make it as funky as I please. Julie, looking forward to your new web in 2017 to push me forward with a novel. And Ari, love your post and quote.

    1. lol nothing wrong with naps my friend. Good luck on your memoir and your novel, it sounds lovely that they are stories of your dogs (sorry to hear one of your beloved dogs has crossed the shadowed veil, may their memories keep you happy until you meet again).

I look forward to hearing more about your work once it’s published 🙂

I am looking for new guest posters for next year, if you would be interested (would be in April so a good long while away) please let me know and I can send you the details 🙂

  2. Mmmmm…to-do lists…an OCDer’s porn. I loves me some lists! Even better, when they’re done up in cute notebooks, written with pretty colored pens. Even better than *that*, when items get crossed off those lists! Also: WOW how do you find time to breathe with all those balls in the air? That’s impressive!

    1. OMG you have read my mind!! That is EXACTLY how I love lists, crisp clean note pads, multi-coloured fine tip pens (usually in a rainbow colour) and the awesomeness of ticking things off… OCDer’s porn indeed!

Lol I don’t, I think I’ve been holding my breath for the past…well…many years! I think the only reason I haven’t just had a total burnout is because my partner keeps a keen eye on me and stops me from overdoing it (mostly) ;p

  3. I need to completely revise all three novels I’ve written and get them as polished as I can for publication.

I would also like to produce two more first draft novels. I would like at least one of them to branch out to something new for me. Dragons, elves, maybe angels.

    1. Wow those are some intense goals, good luck to you! 🙂 I love strong goals. Oooh dragons! I love reading about dragons! Am looking forward to hearing more about your work

  4. “A goal is a dream with a deadline…way to suck the fun out of dreaming!” Ha! That’s brilliant. And so TRUE!!!

I’m so glad to hear you’re going to tackle the 85K Writing Challenge again this year, Ari! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the support features I’ve built into the website. I’M DYING TO TELL PEOPLE!!! But it’ll be up soon. Official launch is January 1, 2017 (fitting for a New Year, a new challenge, and a new website) but I’ll be slowly leaking content in November and December. Come write with me! We’re going to have so much FUN!

And when you get all of those snippets and post-it notes organized, snap a picture. I’d love to see it. Giant cork board?

    1. Yes I am really looking forward to the 85K challenge, I am sure it is what kick-started my writing again after such a long hiatus. oooh new features!? That sounds interesting, can’t wait to learn more.

lol I dont think there is a cork board big enough. 🙂 I’m going to Card Catalogue them all, but yes I may snap a pic 🙂
